Uni-Impresa finances the project “PARSIL – SILencing the PARasites: RNA

Interference as a sustainable and innovative tool for managing Varroa destructor and Dermanyssus gallinae”, coordinated by Prof. Giuseppe Fusco in collaboration with Smart Bugs and NEWPHARM Srl

The project aims to develop an approach based on the RNA interference technique for the control of two harmful mites in the livestock sector: Varroa destructor, the main parasite responsible for the decline of colonies of Apis mellifera; and the mite Dermanyssus gallinae, responsible for infestations in #livestock poultry.

The intensive use of synthetic acaricides has led to drug resistance, nullifying treatments and causing ecological and economic damage and risks for human health. The study and development of alternative treatments is therefore crucial to achieve a more effective and sustainable management of parasitic mites for the#environment and the#economics.
